induce, deduce (vv.)
The main contrast is between the senses applied to reasoning: to induce is to reach a conclusion based on an accumulation of evidence; to deduce is to infer from general principles to a conclusion (see also DEDUCE; DEDUCTIVE). Induce also has another cluster of meanings, to persuade, to cause, to lead someone to do or conclude something, as in She induced him to apply; The stuff she took was intended to induce sleep.
