| These are synonyms, and each can be transitive: She can differentiate [distinguish] colors now. Both can combine with from, as in I could never differentiate [distinguish] the first theory from the second, with between, as in My color blindness prevents me from distinguishing [differentiating] between red and green, and with among, as in It is impossible for me to differentiate [distinguish] among all these tiny brown warblers.
