wane (v.)


means “to grow smaller,” and it is typically applied to the dwindling of the moon, as in The moon waned toward the end of the month, and the nights became darker. Standard English frequently uses wane figuratively, as in After Christmas, my interest in food waned perceptibly. See WAX.	1
