SOUTHWESTERN REGIONAL DIALECT
This regional dialect of American English has as its chief distinguishing feature its many Spanish borrowings, both in vocabulary and in certain idioms. It is spoken in central and western Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California. Because most of this area has been settled by speakers of English for a relatively short time, and because the last few decades have seen huge migrations into much of this region from other parts of the country, the dialect is less well marked than are the dialects of the eastern half of the country. Southwestern shares a number of features with the Western dialect.
