| The noun diagnosis retains its foreign plural, diagnoses, pronounced dei-ig-NO-seez. It is the process of identifying or describing an illness; prognosis (plural: prognoses) is the prediction of the likely course the disease may take and of whether and how soon the patient may recover. Today Standard English makes increasing figurative use of both words. | 1 |
