Repeal of the Stamp Act, followed by the Declaratory Act (March 18), declaring that the king, by and with consent of Parliament, had authority to make laws to bind the colonies in all respects.
The Townshend Acts imposed duties on glass, lead, painters' colors, tea, and paper imported into the colonies. Out of these revenues, fixed salaries were to be paid to royal officials in the colonies. A Boston town meeting adopted a nonimportation agreement. Poor and working-class people in the port cities were especially receptive to the notion of an economic boycott.
