Italy declared war on Austria (June 18) but Archduke Albert defeated Italy at the second battle of Custozza (June 24). France ceded Venetia, which it had gained from Austria, to Italy (July 3). The Italian fleet was defeated by the Austrians (July 20).
The last French troops were withdrawn from Rome. Garibaldi again led his volunteers and began the invasion of papal territories. He was captured twice but escaped (Sept. 1867).
