At thirty-four, she was appointed head of the National Institute of Standards and Technology by President Clinton. She was the first woman to lead the 3,000-employee agency and among the few to be appointed from without rather than from within the agency. Earlier, she had been the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in applied physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). |
