| 18661941, British colonial administrator. He was a Liberal member of Parliament from 1900 to 1910. He served as governor of Bombay presidency (191319) and of Madras presidency (191924) and as governor-general of Canada (192631). As viceroy and governor-general of India (193136) he repressed passive-resistance campaigns of the Indian National Congress. He was created baron in 1910 and marquess in 1936. |
