Willingdon, Freeman Freeman-Thomas, 1st marquess of
 
 
1866–1941, British colonial administrator. He was a Liberal member of Parliament from 1900 to 1910. He served as governor of Bombay presidency (1913–19) and of Madras presidency (1919–24) and as governor-general of Canada (1926–31). As viceroy and governor-general of India (1931–36) he repressed passive-resistance campaigns of the Indian National Congress. He was created baron in 1910 and marquess in 1936.
