(rnst v´khrt) (KEY) , 1887–1950, German novelist. His works, distinguished by a poetic prose style, generally deal with his native East Prussia and the upheavals of the world wars. They include Die Magd des Jürgen Doskocil (1932, tr. The Girl and the Ferryman, 1947), Der Totenwald (1945, tr. The Forest of the Dead, 1947), and Missa sine nomine (1950, tr. 1953). Also of interest is the autobiographical novel Wälder und Menschen (1936).
