(wk´´shch´) (KEY) , city (1990 pop. 18,168), seat of Ellis co., N Tex.; inc. 1861. A market center (especially for cattle) in the rich blackland prairie, it also has small manufacturing industries. In 1989 construction began on what was planned to be the world’s largest particle accelerator, but the U.S. Congress killed the project in 1993.
