| 1894–1977, American educator, b. Lancaster, Wis., grad. Notre Dame (B.A., 1915; M.A., 1920) and Columbia (Ph.D., 1940). He was head of the department of English at Notre Dame (1920–24) and professor of English at St. Joseph’s College for Women, Brooklyn, N.Y. (1924–35); at Hunter College he was dean and acting president (1939–40) and president (1940–60). Upon retirement from Hunter he became assistant to the president of the Univ. of Notre Dame (1961–71). His writings include The Catholic Spirit in Modern English Literature (1922), The Germans (1932), The English Ode from Milton to Keats (1940), Education and Moral Wisdom (1960), and Catholic Education in a Changing World (1968). | 1 | | See his autobiographical The Ground I Walked on (1961, 2d enl. ed. 1969). | 2 |
