(käl´m) (KEY) , formerly Albertville (älbrvl´) (KEY) , city (1984 pop. 73,528), Katanga province, SE Congo (Kinshasa), on Lake Tanganyika at the mouth of the Lukuga River. It is a commercial center and a rail-steamer transfer point, handling goods moving between the Congo and Tanzania. Manufactures include textiles and cement. The city was founded in 1892 by Belgians as a military post in their campaign against Arab traders.
