Houma
 
 
(h´m) (KEY) , city (1990 pop. 30,495), seat of Terrebonne parish, SE La.; inc. 1848. Houma is a port on the Intracoastal Waterway. Motor vehicles, oil field equipment and machinery, chemical tanks, and wire rope are produced. There is shipbuilding (including tugboats) and shrimp processing. Founded in 1834, the city has many fine antebellum buildings. Nearby is a U.S. sugarcane experiment station.
