(g ôr´g fsk) (KEY) , city (1989 pop. 63,000), SE European Russia, in the northern foothills of the Caucasus. It is an agricultural center with some industry. It was founded (1777) as a Russian fortress. The agreement by which Georgia became a vassal of Russia was signed at Georgiyevsk in 1873. |
