(f´r d sntä´n) (KEY) , city (1991 pop. 340,621), Bahia state, E Brazil, between the Jacuípe and Pojuca rivers. It is a distribution center for the products of Bahia’s interior and is one of the state’s leading producers of dried beef. Tobacco, manioc, beans, and corn are grown, and ceramics, bicycles, and furniture are produced. Cattle breeding is also important. The city is a major highway nexus.
