Commanding the supply ship for the colony planted (1509) near Cartagena by Ojeda, he met the discouraged men who had abandoned the settlement and persuaded them to found a new one in Darién, where he had a troubled history as administrator. His Suma de geografía, an excellent commentary on the flora and fauna he had observed in the New World, appeared in 1519. |
