Dartmouth, town, United States
 
 
residential and resort town (1990 pop. 27,244), Bristol co., SE Mass., on Buzzards Bay, in a dairy region; settled c.1650, inc. 1664. Farming, fishing, boatbuilding, and tourism are its economic mainstays. The town was practically annihilated in King Philip’s War but was rebuilt and later became a shipbuilding center. A campus of the Univ. of Massachusetts is in North Dartmouth, and a state park faces Buzzards Bay.
