Chapel Hill
town (1990 pop. 38,719), Orange co., central N.C., at the edge of the Piedmont; founded 1792, inc. 1851. Primarily residential, the towns economy is based on research and education. Chapel Hill is part of Research Triangle Park (est. 1959), an area and organization shared with Durham and Raleigh that utilizes the talent of the cities universities. Chapel Hill is the seat of the Univ. of North Carolina (see North Carolina, Univ. of) and home to the North Carolina Botanical Gardens.
