Cartwright, William

1611–43, English author and divine. An ardent royalist and disciple of Ben Jonson, he had a high reputation as a preacher and author. In addition to his poems, which are now almost entirely forgotten, Cartwright wrote plays, of which The Ordinary (1635?) and The Royal Slave (1636) were the most successful.   1
See his works (ed. with an introduction by G. B. Evans, 1951).   2
