Beauharnois, Charles de la Boische, marquis de
 
 
(shärl d lä bwäsh märk´ d bärnwä´) (KEY) , 1670–1749, French governor of New France (1726–46). Despite the loss (1745) of Louisburg to the British, which led to his replacement, Beauharnois’s rule was generally peaceful and prosperous. He returned (1747) to France and served as a naval official.
