Baliqiao

(bä-l-chou) (KEY)  or Palikao (pä´l´kou´) (KEY) , village, Hebei prov., China, near Beijing. There, in 1860, a British and French force that had recently occupied Tianjin defeated a Chinese army and invaded Beijing. China agreed to all Western demands, including the payment of indemnities and the acceptance of foreign diplomats at the imperial court in Beijing. The occupying forces were then withdrawn. The name also appears as Pa-li-ch’iao.
