Baharampur
 
 
(bhä´rmpôr) (KEY) , Berhampur, or Berhampore (bûr´mpôr) (KEY) , city (1991 pop. 126,400), West Bengal state, E central India. It is a road and rail hub; jute and rice are traded. Its industries include silk weaving, ivory carving, rice and oil-seed milling, and precious-metal working. It was the scene of the first major confrontation of the Indian Mutiny.
