Armistead, Lewis Addison

181763, Confederate general, b. New Bern, N.C. He was commissioned (1839) in the U.S. army from Virginia but resigned when that state seceded. In the Gettysburg campaign, Armistead, commanding a brigade under G. E. Pickett in the famous charge, accomplished the farthest penetration of the Union lines, but he was mortally wounded. A monument where he fell marks the high tide of the Confederacy.
