Once a quiet sugarcane town with a sugar refinery, it is the site of numerous housing developments. Many residents work at nearby military installations, and there is varied manufacturing. Between Aiea and Honolulu are the Tripler Army Medical Center and U.S. Fort Shafter, headquarters of the Army’s Pacific Ocean Division.
