§ 16. challenged

People who object to the terms handicapped and disabled as being too negative sometimes propose the substitution of challenged instead, especially in the phrase physically challenged. While this usage may have its place, as in referring to athletes with physical disabilities, it has failed to gain general acceptance in broader contexts. Indeed, it is frequently ridiculed as an awkward and condescending euphemism and is better avoided in ordinary contexts.    1
