ETYMOLOGY:Middle English enhauncen, from Anglo-Norman enhauncer, variant of Old French enhaucier, from Vulgar Latin *inaltire, from Late Latin inaltre : Latin in-, causative pref.; see en–1 + Latin altus, high; see al-2 in Appendix I.
