ETYMOLOGY:Alteration (influenced by stall1) of obsolete stale, pickpocket's accomplice, from Middle English, decoy, from Anglo-Norman estale, of Germanic origin; akin to possibly akin to Old English stl, stathol, place, position. See staddle.
