1. To oppose with an equal weight; counterbalance. 2. To act against with an equal force or power; offset.
ETYMOLOGY:Alteration (influenced by poise1) of Middle English countrepeis, from Old French contrepeis : contre-, counter- + peis, weight; see avoirdupois.
