NOUN: Any of several South American perennial herbs of the genus Alstroemeria, popular as cut flowers for their showy, variously colored blooms.
ETYMOLOGY:New Latin, genus name, after Baron Clas Alstroemer (1736–1794), Swedish naturalist.
