ETYMOLOGY:Spanish, alteration of hijo dalgo, from Old Spanish fijo dalgo : fijo, son (from Latin flius; see dh(i)- in Appendix I) + de, of (from Latin d; see de–) + algo, something, possession (from Latin aliqu, ablative of aliquid ( alius, some; see al-1 in Appendix I + quid, something; see kwo- in Appendix I).
