ETYMOLOGY:French, alteration (influenced by bêche, grub) of biche-de-mer, from Portuguese bicho do mar : bicho, worm (from Late Latin bstulus, diminutive of Latin bstia, beast) + do, of the + mar, sea (from Latin mare; see mori- in Appendix I).
