NOUN:1. Archaic The red color of a coarse woolen cloth sometimes used for undergarments. 2. Obsolete A coarse woolen cloth for undergarments.
ETYMOLOGY:Probably alteration of stamin, from Middle English stamyn, from Old French estamine, from Vulgar Latin *stminea, from Latin, feminine of stmineus, consisting of threads, from stmen, stmin-, thread. See st- in Appendix I.
