ETYMOLOGY:Spanish la reata : la, the (from Latin illa; see al-1 in Appendix I) + reatar, to tie again ( re-, again, from Latin; see re– + atar, to tie, from Latin aptre, to join, from aptus, past participle of apere, to tie).
