TRANSITIVE VERB: To break or separate (something) into fragments.
INTRANSITIVE VERB: To become broken into fragments: After the election, the coalition fragmented.
ETYMOLOGY:Middle English, from Latin fragmentum, from frangere, frag-, to break. See bhreg- in Appendix I.
