James Wood, comp. Dictionary of Quotations. 1899.

Descartes

Cogito, ergo sum—I think, therefore I am.

Pour savoir quelles étoient véritablement les opinions des hommes, je devois plutôt prendre garde à ce qu’ils pratiquoient qu’à ce qu’ils disoient—To know what men really think, I would pay regard rather to what they do than to what they say.

To know the true opinions of men, one ought to pay more respect to their actions than their words.

When any one has offended me, I try to raise my soul so high that the offence cannot reach it.
