Epitaph in General Greene

William Pierce

LIKE other things this marble must decay,

The cipher’d characters shall fade away,

And naught but ruin mark this sacred spot,

Where Greene’s interr’d,—perhaps the place forgot.

But time, unmeasured, shall preserve his name,

Through distant ages shall roll on his fame;

And, in the heart of every good man, raise

A lasting monument of matchless praise.
