Jeune Fille
By Clara Shanafelt

From “In Summer”

  BENEATH the ledges
Lie the pools—
Cupped in the ruddy rock,
Bright pools of mountain water,
Unimaginably clear.        5
There is no sky, no distance;
The friendly wood leans near.

  In wet, luxurious moss I plant my feet,
Unimaginably white;
It pleases me to think of my white body here,        10
Released in fair water, to charm
A delicate lover.
