Barney

Robert J. Roe

From “A Sailor’s Note-book”

BARNEY is bad watch-mate,

Whatfor I do many times his work

Un hate him for it.

But when I go out on jib-boom

Im squally night

To makeit fast the headsails,

Un sea takes me in his mouth

Up to mine waist

Un spits me out again,

Barney is like angel

Sweating in cold blow.
