The Cuban in the States
By Haniel Long

From “On the Road”

THE NORTH is beautiful, and I
  Would like it—but for me
How bud the lips of woman by
  The soft Habana sea!

And how can one who long has known        5
  The fragrance of this rose
Keep from his frozen lips a moan
  Against the northern snows?

I shiver at the closing white—
But on the sunburnt South        10
I lie in an eternal night
  Of sighing mouth on mouth.
