Epitaph on the Countess of Pembroke
By Ben Jonson (1572–1637)

          Sister of Sir Philip Sidney. She died on Sept. 25, 1621.

UNDERNEATH this sable herse
Lies the subject of all verse,
Sidney’s sister, Pembroke’s mother;
Death! ere thou hast slain another,
Learn’d and fair, and good as she,        5
Time shall throw a dart at thee.
