May 11
One Country—One Sacrifice
By Richard Watson Gilder (1844–1909)

Ensign Worth Bagley was killed at the battle of Cardenas on May 11, 1898, and was the first of our naval officers killed in the war with Spain.

IN one rich drop of blood, ah, what a sea
Of healing! Thou, sweet boy, wert first to fall
In our new war; and thou wert southron all!
There is no North, no South—remembering thee.
