Folliott Sandford Pierpoint (18351917)
FOLLIOTT SANDFORD PIERPOINT, the author of the well-known hymn commencing For the beauty of the earth, was born at Spa Villa, Bath, on the 7th of October, 1835. He was educated at Queens College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1871. He published The Chalice of Nature and other Poems at Bath, republishing it in 1878 as Songs of Love, the Chalice of Nature, and Lyra Jesu, besides which he contributed hymns to the Churchmans Companion and to Orby Shipleys Lyra Eucharistica. The hymn by which he is best known was contributed to the second edition of that work, from which it has been many times reprinted in various modified forms. The following is the original form.
