By Critical and Biographical Essay by Alfred H. Miles

Herbert Knowles (1798–1817)

OF “single” poems, the following, written in Richmond Churchyard, Yorkshire, has been one of the most popular. Herbert Knowles, the author, was born at Canterbury in 1798, and died in 1817. Southey, always ready to recognise struggling talent, published these “Lines” in the Quarterly Review, vol. xxi., pp. 397, 398, from which it has been reprinted in countless anthologies.
