| Augustin S. Macdonald, comp. A Collection of Verse by California Poets. 1914. | | | | An Indian Verse | | By Hu Maxwell |
| | Translated from Language California Indians DARLING mine, sweet mine, we sever. | |
| I am going far from thee. | |
| Must this parting be forever? | |
| Shall we stroll beside the sea | |
| Any more? The sea breeze blowing | 5 |
| Soft I feel upon my brow; | |
| And I see the lightning glowing | |
| On the distant mountain now; | |
| And the verdant valleys under | |
| All the hills are gleaming bright, | 10 |
| Lit by lightning, while the thunder, | |
| Dull and mournful, blends with night. | |
| And, alas! thou art not near me, | |
| And my soul is sad and lone! | |
| Fare thee well. Thou canst not hear me | 15 |
| All my joy and bliss are flown. | | | | |
