Fortune

The Asmenidae (circa 400 A.D.)

O FORTVNA potens, at nimium leuis,
tantum iuris atrox quae tibi uindicas,
euertisque bonos, erigis improbos,
nec seruare potes muneribus fidem.
Fortuna immeritos auget honoribus,        5
Fortuna innocuos cladibus afficit.
iustos illa uiros pauperie grauat,
indignos eadem diuitiis beat.
haec aufert iuuenes ac retinet senes,
iniusto arbitrio tempora diuidens.        10
quod dignis adimit, traicit ad inpios.
nec discrimen habet rectaue iudicat:
inconstans fragilis perfida lubrica
nec quos clarificat perpetuo fouet,
nec quos deseruit perpetuo premit.        15
