Frank J. Wilstach, comp. A Dictionary of Similes. 1916.

Sigmund Krasinski

Changeful … as are the waves before the breath of winds.

Fair as Aphrodite rising from the deep-blue Grecian sea.

Fleeting as a passing sigh.

Flicker like a lamp.

Flutter like a flickering, dying lamp.

Glitters like a sea of light.

Hiss like vipers.

Impatient as a boy.

As numberless as they that at last will throng into the valley of Jehosaphat.

Obstinate … like the corpse in the fable, threatening the driver of the hearse with vengeance dire at every gate of fatal charnel-house.

Idols are overturned like new-mown grass.

Pure as purest vestal virgin.

Rushed upon us like a lava torrent.

Sad as an image of despair.

A smouldering fire, shining like lamps through rents in sepulchres.

Stir like the hail of musketry in fight.

Swayed, like grain-fields when the wind breathes over them.

Transparent as pure water.

Wild as a fiend.
