Frank J. Wilstach, comp. A Dictionary of Similes. 1916.

John Hay

Dreadful as a gathering storm.

Joyous, like a rising star.

The little man skimmed down the hill,
Like a swallow down the wind.

Wine is like rain: when it falls on the mire it but makes it the fouler,
But when it strikes the good soil it wakes it to beauty and bloom.
