Nursing is a very complex career that at many times requires one to be a leader. Nurses can be leaders in formal roles and also on the unit during any given shift. Nursing is a career that truly tests the character and attributes of those who choose to enter this career. Leadership in nursing is vital in creating a successful environment for patients. According to Stichler (2006), “effective leadership is essential to transforming organizations into environments that are safe for both patients and staff” (p. 422). Therefore, it is vital that as new nurses start out his or her careers that they learn from great leaders who are already in the profession. There are several great leaders working in the field who have a plethora of …show more content…
I believe great leaders who really make an impact, have a healthy balance between the two. If a leader spends no time outside of work that can lead to burn out and the whole medical team can suffer as a result. The first question I asked was if she could tell me about her past job experiences. She told me that her very first management role was as a head nurse on a maternity unit. She worked there for several years. She also told me she is going on her ninth year at Viterbo University. I then asked her about her current role at Viterbo University. She currently teaches two sections of the family course and one section of nursing concepts. She has been working on starting a new class at Viterbo University that would allow her to teach on a subject she is compassionate about, spirituality and healing. She had a very complex her role in initiating this course. She first had to meet with the chair of religious studies to receive endorsement for the course to qualify. Then, after the semester she could not hold the class due to low registration, she had to meet with the chair of religious studies again and receive the endorsement. She then worked with the religious studies staff to develop the entire course and its outcomes. The course is called Healing & Christian Spirituality. She was able to offer the course last school year, but there were not enough students
In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also
During my term in school I have often thought about what department of nursing I would like to go into, but I did not put too much thought into the steps it would take to become a nurse in Illinois. I have been so focused on being a mom of four, going through nursing school and keeping my job (not in medical) of eleven years that I haven’t had a real mental opportunity to consider how I will retain a holistic life balance, which stressors or challenges I may face, how I will continue to learn throughout my life as a nurse, nor what type of contributions I can make as a professional nurse. Through researching these questions, I have learned a lot about, the process and myself.
I really had no idea what is was to be a nurse or let alone the responsibilities, the courage, and the determination it takes to not only complete nursing school and to continue to face the challenges of being an active nurse in the healthcare community. This leadership course and the clinical experiences I have had, provided me with an opportunity to grasp nursing beyond the what is taught at school. Understanding what it really means to be a nursing leader and the qualities of what a nurse must really equip him or herself on a daily basis are edifying. The purpose of this paper is to share with readers the valuable lessons I have learned and leadership qualities I have gained from several experiences, in addition to, how I will continue my journey and accomplish my goals as a future nursing leader.
Today professional nursing leaders are multifaceted; they teach, mentor and motivate the staff to do more with less all while balancing the financial restrictions found in healthcare. The nurse leaders of today must learn from the past, absorb the present, and prepare for the future. As healthcare in America changes, so too does the nursing profession and the nursing leaders have the responsibility to keep up with the changes.
In the world of medicine, the continuum of educating the nurse begins in the classroom and can end in the patients’ room. This is a nurse lifelong journey of education. Learning does not cease there. Whether it is in the practicum setting of the hospital, teaching staff or the staff-teaching patients there is a benchmark set by the institution to be accomplished. There are numerous ways to become a leader and initiate many positive aspects of a good strong leader. Example, the nurse educator had the opportunity to become a positive role model to a student on a masters level and share her skills of educating others. This career has gone beyond the bedside teaching and extended to a leader initiating quality and safety to another nurse. As a
I learned the importance of becoming a true leader in nursing from the nursing leadership and management course. I become a lot of my weakness thanks to the knowledge I gained from the Nursing Leadership and Management class. A nurse leader uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal. The leader creates connections among the members of an organization to promote high levels of performance and quality outcomes. (Maryol, 2017). The class helped me defined my leadership style which is a combination of authoritative and democratic. It also helped me understand the importance of developing good coaching skills. After all, The goal of coaching is to eliminate or improve performance problems. (Maryol,
I chose Nursing as a career because I knew I could make a lot of money and I knew that it is something that I would like to do. Before coming to job corps, I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life. When I came here to job corps, I checked out and job shadowed a lot of the trades but after learning about Nursing and the money I could make and all the places I could work with my Nursing certification, I decided that this was the trade for me. I was experienced in Nursing but I got a lot more experience when I came to job corps. I didn’t know how to do every skill properly, but after Mrs. Osbourne showed me how to perform every skill I’m confident that I will pass state board. Nurses make a lot of money and that’s one of the reasons
“Nurses entering this specialty must highlight not only their clinical skills, but also their critical thinking, advocacy and analytical abilities. Communities are dynamic, and nurses must adapt to and be able to provide patients with whatever care is needed.” (Meadows, 2009). The PHN uses clinical knowledge along with an ecological viewpoint. A public health nurse can practice in clinics, health departments, faith-based organizations, mobile vans, homes, correctional facilities, occupations, community centers and hospitals. There is no setting that a public health nurse cannot practice to deliver a community-focused intervention.
Nursing is a dynamic and challenging profession requiring engaging and inspiring role models and leaders. The world is changing and a new generation of nurses is needed to help meet the demand of the evolving healthcare community. Nurses are expected to take on a leadership role within the hospital, long term facility and home care facility. An excellent leader must understand the values of patient-centred care and personal responsibility to promote legal, safe and ethical care. However, leaders must know also how to be in challenging situations and they are comfortable with ambiguity, uncertainty and possibility. Every nurse is constantly striving to improve their leadership skills. In order to become an effective leader, nurses should know the strengths and weaknesses of the leadership styles and when is the best time to implement each
I chose this article because honestly I was intrigued by the title as soon as I read it. I wanted to learn more about what it takes to become a great leader in the career field of nursing. This article can contribute to what we already have discussed about leadership in this class. Since we all know what leadership style we possess this article can also help us to identify the attributes and skills effective in becoming a positive nurse leader. “Recognise that leaders have drive, energy and vision, self-discipline and flexibility, with the ability to assemble a team and motivate others” (Scully, 2015, p. 443).
No one said leading was easy, and in the book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, John C. Maxwell addresses the principal of transformational leadership, and how there is more than one aspect in becoming a successful leader. Leadership is one of the many desirable qualities in becoming successful not only in everyday life, but also in nursing. This paper will discuss ways to develop into an effective, successful leader, the necessary steps to increase leadership ability, and how leadership can affect personal growth in nursing practice.
Along with a Director of Nursing and Nurse Manger there are other professionals to make sure that operations take place in healthcare. APRN’s, RN, BSN’s, LPN’s and CNA’s within a team a chain of command can be set up where leadership can be shared. Another leadership characteristic that I find important in healthcare today is shared leadership (Sullivan, 2012, p. 44). The education level of today’s healthcare teams is higher than any time before in history. Sharing leadership is very important
Nurses are official, and sometimes unofficial leaders in the care of a patient. Leadership can not only be by a formal role or title, but a presence and an empowerment quality that motivates others around them to strive to succeed. A nurse with the quality of leadership has proven to be extremely influential in the care of a patient. In the clinical setting, I exhibit leadership by advocating for my patients, practicing to the best of my ability, utilizing my time and resources, practice adequate communication skills, and recognizing the hard work of my peers.
Nursing is a very intriguing profession with an open door to many new opportunities. While in the field many exciting experiences may come at you. The medical field has always interested me, but I was never quite sure on what career would suit me best and was the right one to pursue. There are many nurses in my family: my mom, sister in law, my cousin’s wife Taylor and my aunt Julene. After hearing all of their exciting stories I decided that nursing is the perfect career. It provides a great place to start at and expand to bigger and better things. In nursing you never know what is going to happen. There is constant excitement and challenge in a nurse’s life. As weird as it may sound, I enjoy being in charge when there is change going
As Mother Teresa said: “It is not how much you do but how much love you put in the doing”. These words can not but be common for nurses all over the world. Well, what makes them love their profession? How did people decide to make nursing their career choice? What are the reasons for people to start such a way of life? As it goes without saying, nursing can not be called a profession or job only. It is something very special that totally changes your life.
