Driverless cars are the technology of the future. There is no longer a need to drive using your hands, just type in your destination in the GPS, and the car gets you there. These cars are still being tested, but they are expected to get on the roads soon. There are some drawbacks that have held up the process to let these cars on the roads, but the companies will fix these problems. Driverless cars have a lower crash rate than humans, they are safe, and don’t make mistakes like people do on the road.

Engineers have been tinkering with ideas for driverless vehicles since the 1920s. In 1925 the first driverless car, named the Linrrican Wonder, was taken through traffic jams up broadway and across fifth avenue in New York. The Linrrican Wonder was controlled by a car following behind sending radio signals to small electric motors. Later, in 1953, RCA Laboratories designed a mini car that ran along wires on the floor. Five years later, they built a full sized model and demonstrated it by putting detector circuits under the road that sent signals to the car and controlled the steering and brakes. RCA

Self driving vehicles is a huge change in our society. We are taking the next step into the future and creating something bigger than ever. Driverless cars can be a good thing and a bad thing in todays society. We depend on so many things now, the older we get and the more time goes on, the lazier we get. Being Americans, we are putting our thoughts and ideas to the ultimate test to create something so dangerous but so efficient. The first idea of self-driving cars dates back to 1939, when the vision was debuted by General Motors, at a sponsored exhibit at the World’s Fair in New York. The autonomous car was shown as part of a display called “Futurama”. Part of this display included automated highways and expressways, but the exhibit also had the idea of self-driving cars. Even though the designer Norman Bel Geddes had these ideas then, working prototypes would not be seen for another 40 years.
